We kicked off our new SciComm Safari series with a behind-the-scenes visit to Technopolis (Mechelen). A small BE SciComm group toured exhibits, compared notes with the team, and reflected on what makes experiences land. Many thanks to Marjolein Van Ginneken, Marian Michielsen, and Nicky Rondelez for the generous time and candour.
Why a SciComm Safari?
Because most of us work inside our own organisations and rarely sit down with peers across museums, universities, media, NGOs, and agencies. BE SciComm wants to change that. Alongside our yearly meetup in Brussels, the Safari series creates more chances to meet, on each other’s home turf. Instead of “neutral territory,” we visit science communicators in their natural habitat to see how they work, swap approaches, and build practical relationships.

Some takeaways from our visit to Technopolis
The Triangle of WOW
At Technopolis, everything starts with WOW. Their philosophy is to ignite a spark: "Wow! This is possible?!” “Wow, I could do this too!?” “Wow, so that’s how it works!?". We saw the approach, what Nicky called 'the Triangle of WOW', in action: Story + Hands-on + Knowledge in action—from the delightful Wonderhead (ages 3–8) to a playful, thought-provoking AI exhibition for teens.
“Bully-proof” by design
What makes a good exhibit? Technopolis has an extensive checklist built on years of experience. Durability is non-negotiable—a lot can break. Partners and researchers often underestimate maintenance and misuse scenarios.
Shows & storytelling are a differentiator
Live shows and strong storytelling set Technopolis apart. They embrace their reputation for a very lively audience (yes, that means that things do get broken) and design accordingly.
Measure what matters
The team recognizes there are a lot of untapped opportunities to strengthen impact measurement (dwell time, “explain-back” prompts, repeat interactions). Researchers keen on evaluation collaborations: get in touch.
Not just for kids
Missed this visit and keen to explore Technopolis? The good news is you can do so with or without kids.
Host or join the next Safari
We’re planning visits across the country. Want to host a SciComm Safari or join the next one? Drop us a line.
Thank you, Technopolis, for a brilliant first edition. On to Safari #2—and to more peer-to-peer learning in the wild.
