SciComm Safari goes underground

Visit to HADES in Mol on 16 June

Our next SciComm Safari is taking us quite literally to new depths. On Tuesday 16 June, we’ll head 225 meters underground to visit HADES, Belgium’s unique underground research laboratory in the Boom Clay in Mol. Operated by EURIDICE (a partnership between NIRAS-ONDRAF and SCK CEN), HADES is where scientists study the long-term safety and feasibility of geological disposal of radioactive waste in clay.

Why this Safari?

SciComm Safaris are about visiting science communicators in their natural habitat. At HADES, communication goes beyond explaining complex research, it’s about trust, transparency, and public understanding in a sensitive domain.

During this visit, we will:

  • go underground and explore the HADES facility

  • be joined by Katrien Hendrix (Communications at EURIDICE) and Raf Hendrickx (Head of Communication, SCK CEN)

  • discuss how to communicate about radioactive waste, risk, and long-term research

  • exchange experiences with fellow science communicators
