Recap: BE SciComm Career & Networking Fair

Last week, we hosted the second BE SciComm Career & Networking Fair and it was exactly what we hoped it would be: a room full of people talking.

Students, researchers, freelancers, organisations, and science communication professionals came together to better understand who is doing what in the Belgian sci-comm field, where opportunities are hiding, and how we can find each other more easily.

We started with short flash talks from people working in very different corners of science communication. They shared what their jobs actually look like, how they got there, what they enjoy, what is difficult, and what advice they would give to others. Together, their stories showed how broad this field really is: from visual storytelling and digital content creation to research communication and science shows. We covered both the highs (meeting your science heroes for examples) and the lows (navigating internal politics perhaps?).

After that, the real work began: conversations. With the help of the ConversationStarter app, people found their way to each other, asked questions, exchanged experiences, and explored possible collaborations.

A big thank you to everyone who joined, spoke, listened, asked questions, and introduced themselves to someone new. And many thanks to photographer Nora Dekoning.

We hope we made the Belgian sci-comm community a little more visible, a little more connected, and a little easier to navigate.
