Two years of Freelancer Breakfasts

Two years after the very first BE SciComm Freelancer Breakfast, we found ourselves back where it all began: BODEGA in Ghent.

The concept is simple: a small, informal breakfast for people who work independently in science communication: freelancers, small business owners, consultants, writers, trainers, content creators, designers, moderators, strategists, and others building a practice in or around sci-comm.

We started the breakfasts because working independently can be rewarding, but also quite solitary. Freelancers often deal with similar questions, about pricing, clients, positioning, collaboration, visibility, or simply how to make the work sustainable, yet rarely get structured opportunities to discuss them with peers.

What began in June 2024 has grown into a recurring meeting point. We now meet every three months, on the first Friday of February, June, and October, rotating between Ghent, Antwerp, and Leuven (check the event website for up to date info). We would love to branch out further, across the language border and towards the south of the country.

Every edition brings a familiar mix: a few known faces, a few new ones, honest conversations about freelance life, and a few ideas that sometimes turn into a real collaboration.

This Ghent edition was no different. Over coffee and breakfast, we talked about projects, uncertainty, clients, opportunities, and the practical realities of building a career in science communication outside traditional institutions. We share successes and open up our network.

See you at the next edition?
